Hedi Slimane, the controversial former Creative Director of Saint Laurent, is back on the fashion radar and will replace Phoebe Philo at Céline starting from next month. His advent will also coincide with the label’s expansion into menswear, couture, and fragrances, which is a big step forward for Céline.
Considering the signature style brought by Phoebe Philo it has been a mild shock for many to hear about her departure from the brand and, after the announcement of the newly appointed Creative Director, a second wave of complete surprise is likely to approach. In all truth, Hedi Slimane is definitely another strong personality with great abilities to elevate the notoriety of a brand among the public. It might, therefore, be a hazardous choice for Céline but, at the same time, it could also result in a positive turnover.
The first show that will be inaugurating all these changes within the fashion house is going to take place next September and it will likely locate Céline in the club of brands already doing co-ed catwalks.
Slimane stated his delight in embracing such a new and fascinating mission for Céline, while Bernard Arnault also expressed his bliss for the designer’s return to the LVMH Group. “He is one of the most talented designers of our time. I have been a great admirer of his work since we collaborated on Dior Homme. His arrival at Céline reinforces the great ambitions that LVMH has for this Maison”.
At this point, what will happen to the well-known minimalistic aesthetic of the brand remains a solid question mark, but what is sure is that all eyes will be pointing towards Céline in the upcoming months.
