A Paris based producer Tommy Jacob releases his new artwork ‘Project 001’ that reflects everything that Jacob imagined it to be. The release of his forthcoming album was accompanied by a release of an 11-minute long short film. This visual movie is very graphic with each frame telling a captivating story and promoting various bodies of art such as dance.
Tommy Jacob shared some valuable insights into how he started making his own music, a story behind his most recent artwork and even the reason why he decided not to name his songs.
Did you always know you wanted to make music?
I always knew that I wanted to do something artistic. At first, I was really into fashion; I planned to create my own brand.I attended a fashion school called ESMOD, that was dope, but at the end of my course, I didn’t want to start working just yet. I was still curious about so many things, so I have decided to dedicate one year to discover other things that I like. Music was the main point. As you can imagine, I never came back to fashion.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
I don’t think I have a specific music inspiration, I mean I’m a big fan of Kanye West, but I love his work, that’s all. His work doesn’t really influence my work. To be honest, I don’t think I can make the music that I want. I can only make the music that I can do.
To explain, my music is a lot about my feelings, I’m not a huge technician, I don’t have a music background, I have learned how to produce all by myself, and I think it’s really not academic. I’m actually working on my next project, and my plan was to produce it all by myself and also do all the vocals. I would love to be able to sing well, but unfortunately I can’t, so I’m doing a mix between talking/singing, that wasn’t my plan at the beginning, but that’s the best that I can do.That’s what I mean when I say « I don’t think I can do the music that I want, I can only do the music that I can do » I finally love this point, that’s totally me, not someone that I’m trying to be.
Your recent release ‘Project 001’ has eight tracks titled ‘Untitled 1-8’, why did you choose this approach?
I decided to name the songs without any specific names to not give any importance to the track titles. Like this, people who listen to the tracks are not influenced by the title, and they can have their own interpretation of the songs. That’s also a way to make people focused on the sound only, nothing else and like this, they know that there are some other tracks around.I tried to tell a story from the album so if you want to feel the story, you should listen from track 1 to 8.I feel like you would lose the magic and feelings if you would only listen to a track like and not the full album. It’s like a movie; you can’t watch only some scenes in disorder, that doesn’t mean anything. Even if you don’t like some of them, like some parts of a movie, it’s still important for the story and what I tried to make you feel.
What is the storyline behind the short film ‘Project 001’ you released simultaneously with the album?
As well as my songs, this short movie is from my head and my feelings. I decided to create it without talking, and with an open end. In this way you can interpret it how you want, there is no good or bad interpretation. If I can tell you something, it’s about my fear, my doubt, the pressure that I’m under, this thing which kills me and blocks me.
How did you pick the artists you have collaborated with on ‘Project 001’, the album and the short film?
This movie is the thing that I’m the proudest of my life. I’m a huge fan of cinema; aesthetic is really important for me. I wrote it one day without thinking I would be able to make it into reality. For the team, they are all passionate people from Paris, who gave a lot of their time and talent to release this movie that is so much better than I expected. I’m working on the following project, and I will for sure continue to create some visual content like this one for the next stuff.
Your Instagram is artistically pleasing and intentionally systematic and creative, is it part of your creative personality that desires to have themed IG?
I really love visual art, that’s why I was into fashion and now why I’m obsessed with cinema. It’s all about the picture. My Instagram helps me to share my vision that I can’t give with my sound. When I’m listening or doing music I see colors, each color represents an emotion. I tried to make you feel them by my music but also by the visual art and my universe from my Instagram profile. My cover album of project001 is a real piece of art created by the artist Sandjill. It’s not created with a computer; it’s a real painting that represents the feelings of the album: the white texture is my approach to portraying total purity, and the mix of blue represents a kind of a melancholic emotional feeling that takes dominates over the white.
Back in spring, your music was featured in the Valentino show during the New York Fashion Week, how did this collaboration come to life?
I have some friends who were working for Valentino, and they were looking for specific music, they called me for that, and it was an honor for me to be able to join my two passions fashion and music. The deadline was really short. I had less than 3 hours to create a mix and send the track. But I wanted it so much that I gave everything I had and it happened. It happened twice, and that’s something I would love to continue to do. I would love to create sound for fashion shows or cinema.
What was your favorite stop during your Eastern European Tour and why?
Moscow is definitely the best stop on my eastern European tour (even if it’s not in Europe btw haha). I was fascinated by Russia before going there so to be able to go there for the first time because of my music, what a life goal. I loved everything about Moscow: people, culture, architecture, mood… It’s one of my best travel trips of my life.
What do you have prepared for your fans for the future?
I’m working on a new project. I did a lot of collaborations in project001, so this time I want to release a project only by myself, doing both the music and the vocals. I’m also going to write some scenarios for videos. I’m planning to release some new music before April.
