The Sonia Rykiel SS18 collection was an embellishment masterclass, inspiring true decadence with the overarching theme of oysters and alluring and empowering femininity. There was surely no better place for the French fashion house to debut the collection than Paris.
When describing her unique choice of theme, Julie de Libyan, designer for Sonia Rykiel, expressed the collection as an exploration into beauty and femininity. The oyster and the pearl within it represent beauty and inspired a collection of clothes intended to empower those wearing them.
As a result, the catwalk showcased clothing which was freeing, versatile and perfect for every-day summer attire, allowing women the ability to feel they can do anything whilst wearing them.
The variety of tailoring styles were tied together by the oyster theme which runs through the entire collection. Most noticeably this is seen through the many oyster shell embellishments and pearls worn both as jewellery and to adorn dresses, jumpers, and shoes.
In addition to this was the use of scalloped patterns and detailing, as well as the variety of textured fabrics, including crocheting, heavily sequinned outfits and materials that shined with shell-like iridescence.
The oyster theme looked perfectly in place next to the more traditional designs of the Sonia Rykiel collection. The signature stripes, for example, were revised for 2018 Spring/ Summer through pearl embellishments. The pairing of an all black outfit with a box-shaped bag topped with the golden oyster, seen in many of the other SS18 pieces, shows how Sonia Rykiel is able to use its oyster theme with just as much subtlety in some pieces as there is extravagance in others.
As well as exhibiting varying striped patterns, the collection also predicts the continued popularity in 2018 of gingham patterned tops, skirts and dresses. These have been a fashion favourite of designer and high street stores for Summer 2017.
The elegance with which the oyster and pearl theme is worked into current and 2018 spring/ summer trends, highlights the remarkable pairing that is the Sonia Rykiel fashion house under Julie de Libyan.
