A Talk with Vainsanity: Chelsea’s Wonderful Mind

“Vainsanity”  serves as an enigma for the mind of Chelsea, an emotional sketch artist. She allows drawing to heal her thoughts and has been sketching for as long as she can remember. She firmly believes in “The art you make while young is the most true to self you can be. And I want to experience my most true”. Specifically influenced & inspired by artists including Frank Ocean, Tim Burton and Flying Lotus sees an assortment of abstract art, even drawn to “You’re Dead!“.

Who is Vainsanity & what made you choose the name?

Vainsanity is my mind. My desire to be vulnerable and self accepting. I was in a fragile mental state. I thought I was going insane. So I gave my mind a name. Vainsanity became a state of being. It’s doing what you have to do to keep your sanity and loving yourself when you loose it. My ‘insanity’ gives me character and I am okay with it. I want everyone to accept themselves for who they really are. There’s no such thing as normality. Morticia Adams said it best:  “Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly”.

How long have you been sketching and how has your style developed over time?

All my life I guess. I believe every sketch I made as a child was preparing me for today. I feel like the art you make while young is the most true to self you can be. And I want to experience my most true. I stopped second guessing myself while creating. I feel disconnected when I do. The more honest I am, the more my style progresses. My hands are still learning how to translate.

What got you into emotional sketching?

I was trying to find ways to heal myself. For me sketching is like dreaming while awake. Allowing my emotions to take control and communicate with my hand. My thoughts are gone and I am moving through instinct. Projecting the beautiful world I created inside.

How would your friends describe you?

I don’t know, I often get “awkward” but hey, lets ask one.  “Koz (@kozthekid) how would you describe me?”

“Chelsea is the type to wander off and do what she wants whenever she wants.  And it shows up in her style as well.  Wild, free and forget the rules.”

What do you like to do outside of art that contributes to your creativity?

I watch a lot of cartoons and listen to a lot of music. A favorite is Fantasia (1940). A masterpiece! I also love learning about Psychology, Science and Mathematics. Anything that will challenge and show me another way of thinking. Keeping my imagination active. Another quote I live by is “I am not trying to sell you on this idea in the sense of converting you to it,  I want you to play with it. I want you to think of its possibilities.”

There isn’t a right or a wrong way. I keep that in mind while creating/loving. To answer the question. I would definitely say music and psychology is the main resource for my creativity… oh and Sci-Fi.

Do any artists inspire you? Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Allan watts, Frank Ocean and Tim Burton definitely! We would make an amazing film together. And I would want Flying Lotus and on the soundtrack. I recently saw him live in 3D. No words can describe. Something everyone should experience.

How does music influence your art?

Music allows everything to flow with ease. My mind is very active & everything is animated. It makes objects and walls move. I Believe being blessed with ‘bad’ vision has something to do with it. I’m constantly trying to figure out what I’m looking at. I don’t think my art would be the way it was if I had 20/20. But yea music is the only thing that keeps me focus.

What can we expect from you in the future?

More paintings, sculptures and an animated series with the amazing guitarist Koz the Kid.

Where do you post most of your work?

I post my drawings on Instagram. For my paintings, they will be shown April 2018 at my solo exhibit.
